Robot Surgery Q&A

  • What is robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery is a modern approach to performing operations that delivers the ultimate precision with minimal tissue damage. Dr. Lin is an expert in robotic surgery and performs most of his procedures using the cutting-edge Da Vinci Xi® system.
The Da Vinci Xi® has several components:
    Surgeon console
Dr. Lin operates the system while seated at a console, where he can view a high-definition 3D image of your body. He manipulates the master controls below his computer display, and the Da Vinci Xi® system translates his hand movements for the robotic arm to copy. Under Dr. Lin's direct control, the robot uses special surgical instruments to complete your operation.
Patient-side cartDuring your surgery, you lie on the patient-side cart, where there may be three or four robotic arms around you carrying out Dr. Lin's directions. The Da Vinci Xi® system uses EndoWrist® instruments with seven degrees of motion, which is greater than human wrists. Every instrument performs a specific function, from tissue manipulation to clamping and suturing.
Vision systemThe vision system has a high-definition 3D camera fitted to the end of a lighted endoscope. It also features image processing technology that gives Dr. Lin clear, magnified views of your anatomy.

  • Why is robotic surgery a good option?

Robotic surgery is a good option for most patients because it uses minimally invasive techniques. These deliver significant advantages over open surgery, which involves making large incisions through layers of tissue to reach your organs. Minimally invasive surgery uses several far smaller incisions, offering benefits such as:
The least possible tissue damage Reduced postoperative pain Lower risk of infection Shorter stay in the hospitalQuicker recovery Far less scarring
Robotic surgery is the most accurate way of carrying out operations. Even patients who can't undergo open surgery are often goodcandidates for robotic surgery.

  • What conditions can robotic surgery treat?

The Da Vinci Xi® can perform various surgeries, from gynecological and urological procedures to bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Some of the conditions Dr. Lin can treat using robotic surgery include:
    ● Gallbladder disease Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Inguinal hernias Crohn's disease Ventral, umbilical, and incisional hernias Stomach cancer Ulcerative colitis Appendicitis Pancreatic cancer Hiatal hernias
Using the Da Vinci Xi® robotic system, Dr. Lin can complete the most complex and intricate surgeries with unrivaled precision. Patients undergoing robotic surgery typically benefit from improved outcomes and can resume their lives far more quickly.
